Kako javljaju hrvatski mediji, dugometražni znanstvenofantastični film s nijansom ekološke basne, zaradio je više od 350 milijuna dolara u SAD-u i u Kanadi te oko 670 milijuna u ostatku svijeta.
Nikada nijedan film nije tako brzo dosegnuo prag od milijardu dolara, a predviđanja upućuju da bi mogao zaraditi i četiri milijarde dolara.
Avatar, možda najskuplji film u povijesti koji je stajao između 300 i 500 milijuna dolara, sada je treći dugometražni film po zaradi, nakon Titanica, također Cameronova filma, i trećeg dijela Gospodara prstenova, Povratka kralja, Petera Jacksona.
Avatar, film s neobično bogatim sintetskim snimkama, priča je o Jakeu, bivšem marincu, paraplegičaru poslanom na planet Pandoru na kojemu žive modrokoža bića Na'viji, kojima ljudska bića žele ukrasti dragocjeni mineral.
